We don’t take time to think, with our lights burning and refrigerators running, what the coming of the cold days meant to people not hooked to an electricity grid. Food had to be preserved, fuel for fires had to be figured out. There had to be planning ahead and even the best of medieval pocket organizers could still leave you hungry and freezing trying to fight off the latest disease.

The ancients recognized seasonal depressive disorder too. Festivals and honorings, making merry, anything that got people to keep their spirits up and not kill themselves. They were needed for the spring plantings.

From now until vernal equinox, pay your respects to the dark and cold. You never know when the plug gets pulled.
